EQUINE POTOMOVAC
Ehrlichia Risticii Bacterin
PHF

Named after the Potomac River in Maryland, where it was first discovered, Potomac Horse Fever (PHV) is a serious illness of horses caused by the bacteria, Ehrlichia risticii. This bacteria is believed to be carried by aquatic insects, including caddis flies, and is more common in some geographic areas. Horses become infected when they eat or drink anything contaminated with the carrier insects. Once inside the horse, the Neorickettsia risticii bacteria then multiples in the intestinal tract, causing inflammation and colitis. Clinical signs include:

  • Fever
  • Depression
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea

While Potomac Horse Fever is treatable with antibiotics, the condition is fatal about 30% of the time. If you’re in a region or nearby where PHV is present, the best approach may be prevention through vaccination. Merial’s EQUINE POTOMOVAC vaccine is one option available to your veterinarian. They can advise you about specific risks in your area, and the right health strategy for your horse.

INDICATIONS:

Recommended for the vaccination of healthy horses as an aid in the prevention of Potomac Horse Fever (equine monocytic ehrlichiosis) caused by E. risticii.
