Lyme Disease (Borreliosis)Borreliosis is the most common tick-borne disease in Canada.1 The signs of Lyme disease can take months to develop, and symptoms may include recurring lameness, fever, anorexia and depression. Lameness due to arthritis and joint pain is the most common symptom, but dogs with Lyme disease can also present with clinical signs of kidney disease.
Areas of Risk for Your PetDeer ticks (Ixodes scapularis) are the vectors for Lyme disease transmission in animals and people. These ticks are found in grassy areas (including lawns), brush, shrubs, and woodlands – particularly along trails. They prefer moist humid areas. If you take your dog camping, to the cottage, or for walks in parks and wooded areas, they are at increased risk. Advise your veterinarian of these types of activities, and ask about Lyme disease vaccination to protect your pet.
