ZOONOTIC INFECTIONS
How To Protect Your Family
Due to their play habits and attraction to pets, children are the most vulnerable to infection from roundworms and hookworms. This type of infection – one that is passed from animals to humans – is referred to as zoonotic. They usually happen through inadvertent ingestion of soil, sand, plant life or other object has been contaminated by infected animal feces. People can be put at risk by dogs that are not protected against these intestinal worms with a broad spectrum dewormer, like HEARTGARD-30 PLUS.
Roundworms: Once ingested, roundworm larvae migrate through the liver, lungs and other organs, causing a condition known as “visceral larva migrans.” During their travel in the human body, they may cause damage to tissue. The larvae can also affect the nervous system (neural larva migrans) or lodge in the eye (ocular larva migrans), causing permanent damage – even blindness.
Hookworms: When hookworms are ingested, they move within the skin, causing inflammation and a condition called “cutaneous (skin) larva migrans.” These winding red “trails” lesions can be extremely itchy and uncomfortable. Hookworms can also penetrate into deeper tissues and cause damage to the intestine and other organs.
