RELIANT® VACCINES
RELIANT cattle vaccines provide flexibility and dependable protection against key cattle health challenges. These high quality vaccines are tested regularly to assure you of no reversion to virulence.
RELIANT vaccines offer protection against the following diseases:
- IBR (infectious bovine rhinotracheitis)
Sometimes called “red nose,” infectious bovine rhinotracheitis is an acute viral disease that primarily affects the upper respiratory tract. In this form, it is believed to be a participant in bovine repiratory disease complex. The virus is shed in mucosal secretions from the nose and mouth, and can also be spread in the semen of infected bulls. Even after a full recovery, an animal that has been infected with IBR can continue to shed the virus throughout its life during periods of stress. Such animals can be the source of new infections within a herd. IBR can take several forms, including respiratory, ocular, IPV (infectious pustular vaginitis), and IBR abortion. Symptoms vary depending on the form of the disease.
- BVD (bovine virus diarrhea)
This viral disease can affect cattle of all ages and, can take different forms. In the case of acute infections following exposure to the virus, animals may or may not show clinical signs. Symptoms can include fever, nasal discharge, lethargy and mild coughing. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, reduced feeding, and weight loss may also be observed. Infection of pregnant cows can result in numerous outcomes – from healthy births to calves with congenital birth defects to abortion – depending when the infection is acquired. Some animals with BVD can become persistently infected and shed the virus their entire lives. These animals are at risk of developing the mucosal form of the disease – a condition that typically results in death, and is characterized by diarrhea and ulcerative lesions throughout the intestinal tract. BVD virus is also implicated as a participant in bovine respiratory disease complex.
- PI3 (parainfluenza 3)
Infections caused by the parainfluenza-3 virus (PI3) are common in cattle. Although capable of causing disease, PI3 is usually associated with mild to subclinical infections. It can also serve as an participant to the development of secondary bacterial pneumonia. Clinical signs include fever, nasal discharge, increased respiratory rate, and increased breath sounds. PI3 virus is also implicated as a participant in bovine respiratory disease complex.
- BRSV (bovine respiratory syncytial virus)
BRSV is a viral infection associated with respiratory disease. It is most common in young cattle. Severe respiratory disease may occur with initial exposure to the virus, while subsequent exposure results in mild to subclinical disease. BRSV tends to affect the lower respiratory tract, and can lead to secondary infections. Symptoms of the disease include fever, depression, decreased feed intake, increased respiratory rate, cough, discharge from the nose and eyes, and, in later stages of the disease, laboured and open-mouthed breathing.
Animal health is critical in all phases of beef production. Getting calves on the ground and keeping them healthy for the feedlot, retained ownership, or as breeding stock means dealing with a number of health concerns. Sick animals may never catch up to those that stay well, so a thorough, proactive health management plan becomes critical. Talk to your veterinarian about how RELIANT vaccines can fit into that plan.
